33. DIY Plastic Recycling Machines

Louis Bindernagel

various2024/2026

An open-source suite of small-scale plastic reprocessing machines that enables communities to transform discarded plastics into new materials and objects. Designed for adaptability, repair and local stewardship, the system reveals the value chain of plastics and raises questions about sorting, contamination, labour, access and who benefits from 'recycling'. It can be used as both fabrication infrastructure and a participatory research tool, supporting situated experiments and community-led practice.

Louis Bindernagel (DE, born 1991) is a designer, researcher, and sailor committed to ethical, community-driven design that weaves together ecology, culture, and material to build resilient, interconnected systems.
